Why do tunes in a major key, such as Singin' in the Rain, sound cheerful, while those in minor keys – Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall, say – sound gloomy and depressing?

That question was posed recently in an article published at www.newscientist.com entitled, Songs in the key of life: What makes music emotional? The article looks at research that suggests there might be a biological basis for the link between major keys and cheerfulness versus minor keys and sadness, as evidenced by a similar relationship that was observed in speech patterns.

We, of course, cannot reproduce the entire article here. So, for further reading, visit www.newscientist.com.
